Target Population vs Study Population

Research protocol লেখার সময় Target Population এবং Study Population প্রায়ই গুলিয়ে ফেলা হয়। দুটো সম্পর্কিত হলেও এক জিনিস নয়। এই blog-এ সহজভাবে বোঝানো হলো Target Population, Study Population এবং Sample-এর সম্পর্ক।

Target population হলো সেই বড় population, যাদের সম্পর্কে researcher শেষ পর্যন্ত গবেষণার ফলাফল প্রযোজ্য বা generalize করতে চান।

উদাহরণ:

ধরুন study topic: “Association between Serum Uric Acid and Bone Mineral Density among Elderly Patients”

এখানে Target Population হতে পারে: All elderly patients aged 60 years or above.

অর্থাৎ researcher মূলত সব elderly patient সম্পর্কে জানতে চান।

সহজভাবে: Target Population = যাদের সম্পর্কে জানতে চাই।

Study population হলো target population-এর সেই নির্দিষ্ট অংশ, যারা নির্দিষ্ট hospital, place, time period এবং eligibility criteria-এর মধ্যে study-এর জন্য available থাকে।

উদাহরণ (উপরের একই study):

Study Population হতে পারে: Elderly patients aged 60 years or above attending Dhaka Medical College Hospital during the study period and fulfilling the eligibility criteria.

সহজভাবে: Study Population = যাদের মধ্যে বাস্তবে study করা হবে।

ধরুন আপনি hypertension নিয়ে research করছেন। আপনার লক্ষ্য বাংলাদেশের adult hypertensive patients সম্পর্কে জানা।

Target Population: All adult patients with hypertension in Bangladesh.

Study Population: Adult hypertensive patients attending a selected hospital during the study period who meet the eligibility criteria.

Sample: Actually recruited 150 patients.

এগুলো ধারাবাহিকভাবে এভাবে ভাবতে পারেন:

• Target Population → যাদের সম্পর্কে জানতে চাই

• Study Population → যাদের মধ্যে study করতে পারি

• Sample → যাদের আসলে study-তে নিয়েছি

All diabetic patients in Bangladesh

Diabetic patients attending a selected hospital during the study period

↓

Actually recruited 150 patients

• Target Population = যাদের সম্পর্কে জানতে চাই

• Study Population = যাদের মধ্যে study করতে পারি
